The Simple Life

Have you found the simple life? Your world is probably anything but simple. Sports, school, plays, movies, practices, church, and any number of other family activities crowd your life. Complexity and multi-tasking are the words of the day.

This past week the church staff discussed the need for more simplicity in our personal lives as Christians. Why? We do not seek simplicity for simplicity’s sake. Instead, we want to ensure we allow enough space to truly slow down and hear from God.

Christians alone on earth hold the map and compass. We know where to go and how to get there, but only if we consult our map and compass. We must hear from Jesus and from His word. We must sit down and chart our course, especially in the terrain of modern culture that proves to be so confusing and circular at best.

Surprisingly, in a culture where discernment and wisdom is more crucial than ever, we get caught up in the flow of traffic and never double-check our direction. Jesus says, “Enter by the narrow gate…For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matt 7:13-14). Those words are stunning. Yes, Jesus extends his mercy to all mankind, but in the end, few find it. In truth, few are even looking for it. Are you looking for it? Are you looking to him for salvation, a way out of this world destined for destruction?

I hope this week we will take some extra time to slow down, listen, read, meditate, and hear from God.

Derek
